Our music is mostly instrumental. There are a few exceptions, like a track “Shelter” on “E$chaton” or a track “Soliloquy” on “Wasteland”. But, usually we just use speech samples from different economic, political and religious channels of the Western TV.

Hello Maks, Could you introduce Cyclotimia in a few words to us, as well as a short history of the band??
Cyclotimia consists of two members and a great amount of the vintage electronic equipment.

We started in the middle of 1998. Though it wasn't really Cyclotimia yet, we just were experimenting, trying to make some interesting sounds. Our friends invited us to play on a gothic Halloween party. We thought up the name and performed playing some eclectic, mostly improvised material. The show got good responses, so we decided to continue working on Cyclotimia and began recording our first studio album.

Was the absence of lyrics on your tracks, a choice or not?

Our music is mostly instrumental. There are a few exceptions, like a track “Shelter” on “E$chaton” or a track “Soliloquy” on “Wasteland”. But, usually we just use speech samples from different economic, political and religious channels of the Western TV.

What do you think of that violence which does not cease growing in the world: wars and especially terrorism?

I think it’s a logical effect which is based on the non-stop growing American domination in the world. Not every nation wants to live by the laws of “society of consumption” which the western political system implants. I think sometimes terrorism is a sincere attempt to resist this aggressive alien expansion. But, sometimes terrorism is just a part of the bloody business created by some politic experts and accomplished by the secret services.

The name of the band “Cyclotimia” does it returns us to this psychological concept “cyclothymia” which describes a mental state where follow one another of the euphoric periods and the depressive periods? This succession would be it the trade mark of the band?

In the science of social-psychology “cyclotimics” also mean people who are easy manipulated, deprived of the will… So, in our case “cyclotimia” means a sickness based on the mass media manipulations.  A great majority of the western countries population are cyclotimics.

We notice the omnipresence of the facts of September 11 throughout the album? Would be this the source of inspiration for the composition of the album?

Yes. It inspired us to write a track “ Manhattan”, for example. Also a video “Same Place” is based on these events, though, the entire concept of “E$chaton” album was based on the inspiration by the western Christian TV channels. But, an interesting coincidence appeared with our previous album “Wasteland”. We had finished the album a few months before the 9-11 events. Its concept was about a modern megapolis. The front cover of “Wasteland” showed the buildings of the American financial companies, while its back cover showed those buildings in a flash of bright light. Also, we put inside an excerpt from “The Crisis of the Modern World” by Rene Guenon, a French esoteric author who later adopted Islam. This phrase said exactly the following: “Those who wake the brute forces of matter will die smashed by these very forces they wanted to dominate over. Having once put them into motion, it is stupid to hope that they would be eternally under control.” In addition, all the CNN news makers on that day didn’t call the New-York centre other than “wasteland”… Well, all those things put together inspired us to touch a bit the 9-11 theme on “E$chaton”. Besides, our music was a soundtrack to a short documentary “One Day in Wasteland” and a famous Russian computer game “Specnaz Antiterror”.

You make us dive in an atmosphere going of neo-classic arrangements to psychedelic  but always drowned in the apocalyptic one, from where draw your inspiration?

As I already mentioned, we take inspiration from the political, social, financial, religious issues of our time.  But, it doesn’t mean that we are personally fully involved in these issues. Personally we don’t care much about politics, rarely watching TV, and not reading magazines at all. We use mass media only as a source of inspiration. So, our music can be described as a soundtrack to what is happening in the so called “Society of the Spectacle”.

The artwork of the album represents the hell, the human hell and the hell itself with its flames and its torments, why did you chose this cover? And what is that it evokes?

The idea of this cover appeared when just a quarter of the album was made. It was during my visit to a Polish city Gdansk where the painting of the genious German medieval artist Hans Memling was located at the city museum. The idea was to mix a medieval conception of Hell with a modern financial system which is a global  incarnation of the usury sin.

You've released a single in 2005  “Algorithms”, why did you chose this name rather than another?

It just well suited the atmosphere of the composition. Nothing special.

Your last album “E$CHATON” goes back to 2004, is there some upcoming stuff?

Sure. There are a few works to come. Some of them are: “Gloria” vinyl LP, a fully “financial” album “Music for Stockmarkets” CD, and a next full length album “ Styx” CD.

Besides, probably there will appear some less important works.

Was it difficult to be distinguished in the Electro-Indus Russian scene?

I don’t know. We just try to make our best in creating music we like.

Have you ever been on stage out of the russian boundaries? How was made your rise towards the world scene?

This year we are invited to the Wave-Gotik Treffen festival in Germany. But, we’re not sure yet whether we’d go there, as it depends on a few things. As a matter of fact, we perform live very rarely.

In your concerts, you accompany your music by cinematographic works , if you were given the choice to work on a motion picture soundtrack ,with whom (i mean realiser) will it be?
I wouldn’t call it “cinematographic works”. It is rather a video art, a special collage made from the western TV programmes. As far as your question is concerned, I think our music would fit quite well to Godfrey Reggio’s movies like “Koyaanisqatsi” or “Naqoyqatsi”, but there is a perfect music of Philip Glass already…So, we’re late :) Though, Godfrey saw our video “Same Place” and found it wasn’t bad at all.
